Somerset County

Just 40 miles west of New York City and 60 miles north of Philadelphia, Somerset County enjoys a location that affords easy access to major centers with good schools, pastoral settings, beautiful parks, excellent shopping areas and quality communities.

Well served by key Interstates 289 and 78, the County's network of highway connection includes U.S. Highway 22, and State Routes 202 and 206; there is a vast network of rail and bus lines serving the residents as well. Local airports meet limited needs, while Philadelphia and Newark International Airports, within a short distance, serve the public on a global scale.

Progressive and forward thinking, the public school system of Somerset County is augmented by a number of private and parochial schools, expanding the opportunities for a first-rate education. Somerset schools excel in developing programs for gifted and challenged students. Adult classes and continuing education opportunities are readily available in Somerset's Vocational Program and through the efforts of local school boards. Higher education needs are met at the Raritan Valley Community College.

For recreation residents can visit professional regional theatres and cultural centers. Acres of lush county parks offer numerous opportunities including hiking trails, golf courses, tennis courts, skating rinks, ball fields and league sports. Equestrian competition and horse events rank high on the list of Somerset attractions including the Gladstone Driving Event (home to the U.S. Equestrian Team), the Far Hills County Day Polo Classic and the Far Hills Race Meeting. Offering over 4,000 rose plants on more than 5 acres is the Rudolf van der Goot Rose Garden. The Delaware and Raritan Canal, a linear park, winds through the county offering boating, canoeing, fishing and picnicking. Most notable among annual events is the Kugler-Anderson Memorial Day Bicycle Races, known locally as the Tour of Somerville, attracting tens of thousands of spectators for this 50-mile race. And the Somerset County 4-H Fair is the largest in the state.
